Treat Lipodystrophy Coalition Update
July 25, 2014 Dan Gates
GLAD is asking us to get calls/emails out today and Monday, to have people contact their state rep and request that leadership bring the bill to a vote.
We need help getting this act relative to HIV-associated lipodystrophy treatment brought to a vote this session.
For those unfamiliar with the emotional and physical toll brought on by HIV-associated lipodystrophy, it is a debilitating side-effect of some of the HIV medications that causes significant body shape changes. People with lipodystrophy often suffer terrible physical pain; many experience such disfiguration that they isolate from their normal daily activities and remain at home; untreated lipodystrophy is associated with depression, anxiety and even suicide.
The good news: there are treatments available. The bad news: they are cost prohibitive and often not covered by insurance companies in Massachusetts because they are categorized as “cosmetic”.
This bill aims to remedy that, forcing insurance companies to treat HIV-associated lipodystrophy as a valid and real health condition. It would require MassHealth to cover treatments such as liposuction and dermal injections.
